1,000-Year-Old Antique Chinese Ceramic Bowl Sets Record, Auctions at a Whopping Value of $38 Million

Most things lose their value as time passes by, when they deteriorate, break up or fall apart.  Some people even consider old pieces as having no value at all that they thought of just throwing them away. However, this story will definitely change the way many look at old things after learning that a simple Chinese bowl nobody had ever thought of costing that much had a whopping value of $38 million at an auction.

Sotheby’s is a British multinational corporation headquartered in New York City and is one of the largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewelry, real estate and collectibles. At one of their auctions in Hong Kong, they put into bid a small Ru-ware bowl with a blue green and complex interlaced ‘ice crackle’ pattern which according to them was once used to wash brushes.

We’ve had in last 20 years a huge sort of influx of mainland Chinese buyers. We’re filling the room with new prices, new interest and that’s what’s really driven the price today,” Sotheby’s Asia deputy chairman Nicolas Chow said during the auction’s opening.

The antique porcelain Chinese bowl which was still in perfect condition was said to be 1,000 years old and was created during the Song Dynasty in 960-1279 A.D.

The bidding ended with an anonymous phone bidder who bought the bowl for a whopping amount of $38 million.

Sotheby’s said that the Ru-ware bowl had broken previous record for Chinese ceramics when a 500-year-old imperial chicken cup from the Ming dynasty Chenghua period had been sold in 2014 for $36 million.
