During the US elections last November 8, the Canada Immigration website crashed due to the sheer number of users who were, presumably, looking for a way to get out of America and move to Canada as it was soon apparent that Donald Trump would win. Indeed, by midnight he was declared as winner, becoming the 45th president of the United States.
Trump had long been vocal with his anti-immigration stance despite the fact that his current wife Melania Knavs Trump was born in Yugoslavia (now Slovenia) while his first wife Ivana Zelníčková hailed from Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). Of course, Trump was targeting illegal immigrants and foreign Muslims from countries “compromised by terrorism” but many people still think he shouldn’t generalize immigrants, especially since he had immigrants as wives.
Anyway, after Trump’s win and its immigration website crashing, Canada takes a potshot at Trump’s immigration policy, tweeting, “In Canada, immigrants are encouraged to bring their cultural traditions with them and share them with their fellow citizens.”
While the tweet sounded encouraging to many people who were already looking for a place to go to, many think that Canada was just showing off and was not really welcoming Americans with open arms. Still, Canada seems like a refreshing new place to live for many Americans who don’t want to live in the country with Trump as president.
