Cancer-stricken Boy Wished for Death…So His Sick Mom Could Survive
Within just months after 5-year-old Chen Xiaotian was diagnosed with cancer, his 34-year-old mother Zhou Lu contracted kidney disease.
At first, the boy’s condition appeared to be improving but the cancer came back with a vengeance and the doctors said his prognosis was not good: he would not reach adulthood. Meanwhile, his mother required regular dialysis. For two years, the two battled their medical conditions.
Chen’s condition got worse; he was soon paralyzed and blind.
Zhou’s condition also worsened; doctors told her mother Lu Yuanxiu that a transplant is necessary so she could survive. They told her Chen is dying but they performed tests and found that his liver and both of his kidneys were in great condition. Zhou’s and Chen’s tissues match. Thus, Chen’s kidneys could save his mother. Zhou refused pointblank.
Hearing about his mom’s need for a transplant, the young boy volunteered to offer his kidneys so his mother could survive. As a cancer patient, he could not donate while he was alive as it would kill him but Chen wished for death so his kidneys could be used by Zhou.
The mother was horrified of losing her son but knew he could not survive for long. At her son’s insistence, Zhou agreed to be a recipient for his kidney.
When Chen died, doctors immediately harvested the organs.
One kidney was transplanted to Zhou and the other was donated to a 21-year-old girl while his liver went to a 27-year-old man.
The doctors bowed to the boy’s lifeless body and gave a moment of silent salute for this brave young man who died but saved the lives of three others.
Asked why she eventually accepted her son’s kidney aside from the obvious fact that it could prolong her life, Zhou said that although Chen is dead, a part of him is living inside her. She might not have the whole Chen but it was comforting to know a part of him is alive and staying with her for as long as she lives.
