No, it is not a plot for a horror movie but a reality – something you can see for yourself at the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo in Sicily, if you have the time.

The mummy of a 2-year-old child named Rosalia has been so well-preserved that she looks like a child sleeping in her crib, not a child dead for over 90 years! And sometimes, when the conditions are just right, her eyelids would appear to open, revealing her beautiful eyes!

Rosalia’s body, her face, her eyes, everything in her were so perfectly preserved that you might doubt your eyes when you see her among the skeletons in the catacombs. Her hair is wrapped in a large ribbon, too, making her appear adorable as she must have been when she was still alive.

Rosalia was the daughter of Sicilian Official Mario Lombardo. She died of pneumonia on December 6, 1920. Her grieving father just couldn’t bear the thought of burying her and never seeing her face again, so he commissioned Sicilian professor of chemistry and notable embalmer Alfredo Salafia to preserve her.

The results were so awesome that a lot of people sought Salafia’s secret formula. However, he carried the secret to his death; though the formula was later discovered from his handwritten memoir after several years.

As for the crazy phenomenon of Rosalia opening and closing her eyes, Dario Piombino-Mascali, the anthropologist and curator of the Capuchin Catacombs, said this is merely an optical illusion caused by the lights that filter through the side windows of the catacombs.

Still, optical illusion or some form of black magic, the phenomenon has fascinated people for years. Many say that Rosalia’s spirit comes back from time to time to her well-preserved body.
