The owner of a dog named Gemma is now facing animal cruelty charges after authorities confirmed he shot his pet in the head with an arrow, then allowed it to suffer for days before it was rescued. The incident happened in Detroit, Michigan.

Gemma walked up to construction worker, in an apparent bid to ask for help. The man quickly called emergency services and the dog was saved.

Though Gemma did not have identification tags, the owner was identified because the police had received a report from his relative that he shot Gemma because the dog pooped inside the house. A neighbor also confirmed the report, saying the man constantly neglected his pet.

When the authorities arrested the man, he did not deny the charges but said he had intended to bury the dog but it escaped when he was looking for tools.

Despite his statement, the man will still be charged because it is illegal to shoot a dog just to get rid of it. It is possible the man will be banned from pets again in the future.
