Diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy in 2010, 19-year-old Jessica Sharman from Tunbridge Wells, England would suffer from temporary memory loss after each episode of seizures. The momentary memory loss would be gone for about an hour and she will be her normal self again after that.
But last March 2016, she was commuting with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Richard Bishop, when she suffered another episode. Richard held her until she came to and helped her to work but she would not know him after that.
When she came to, she didn’t know him at all and was shocked that this total stranger was cuddling her. A concerned woman ran to her and gave her a hug but she was quite puzzled why this woman did that – not knowing that the woman was her own mother!
Jessica recalled, “I didn’t know what was going on. Momentary amnesia was normal for me after seizures. But an hour or so later I saw this woman running towards me I had no idea who she was. It was my mum, and I just stared at her blankly. My world fell apart that day. I was faced with strangers claiming to be family, telling me things about myself that meant nothing to me.”
Everyone also told her Richard was her boyfriend but she could not remember anything at all and was even scared when he tried to hold her hand.
She was afraid of everyone, thinking they were strangers – and was only convinced a bit when they showed her their photos together. Little by little, she befriended them again but she was more wary of Richard.
“They left me alone with him and I hated it. He was a stranger to me. Rich took me to what was supposedly our favorite park but I wouldn’t even walk next to him. When he held my hand I pulled away,” she recalled. “He was devastated and adamant we could get back what we had. Seeing how passionate he was convinced me that he must care for me, so I agreed to date him, but made no promises.”
Little by little, Richard earned her trust again – and she fell in love with him all over again! She still couldn’t remember her ‘past life’ but has fallen in love with Richard in her ‘second’ life.
“I have recovered a life for myself with the help of my family and, of course, Rich. I feel so lucky that he knew me well enough to stand by me even when I thought of him as a stranger. He practically lives at my house now and our relationship is going from strength to strength,” she mused.
