At 3 AM on May 10, 2016, just a few hours after all voting precincts closed across the Philippines, it was clear to everyone that tough-talking Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is going to win the presidency. He’s millions of votes ahead of his rivals, maintaining the lead he’s had since the counting began.
But while others would have been partying to celebrate the lead, Duterte did something totally unexpected: he went to his parents’ grave and cried his heart out!
“A self-confessed Mama’s boy, Duterte said he long wanted to cry aloud but was too busy for the campaign,” wrote Edith Ging Z. Caduayao shared some photos taken at the grave of Duterte’s parents.
“Duterte’s late father VICENTE, used to be the Governor of one Davao while his mother Nanay Soleng was a public school teacher.”
In the post, Caduayao also revealed that while crying, Duterte pleaded, “Tabangi ko, Ma (Help me, Mom).”
The post has since gone viral, with plenty of people praising Duterte for remaining humble despite the huge lead he now has over his rivals. As of 7 AM on May 10 and close to 90% of votes already accounted for, he has over 6 million votes ahead of closest rival Mar Roxas.
