The hippopotamus, often called ‘hippo’ for short, is a large herbivorous animal that lives in sub-Saharan Africa. As an herbivore, it does not eat animals; thus, when one was seen charging a pack of wild dogs to save an antelope they were trying to eat, everyone clapped and called this hippo a hero.
But it shocked netizens to see the hippo suddenly go berserk and kill the antelope it tried the save earlier!
Considering that hippos are herbivores, he surely would have no use for that antelope yet it seemed that the hippo only ‘saved’ it so he could eat it himself! It was rather distressing to watch the hero hippo become the villain all of a sudden.
It turned out this was not the first recorded incident of a hippo becoming aggressive and turning carnivorous. According to the South African Journal of Wildlife Research in a study entitled “Reports of carnivory by the common hippo Hippopotamus Amphibius“, there were a number of reports about hippos turning predatory – and some even exhibited cannibalism!
These were attributed to nutritional stress and aberrant behavior. This was probably the case with the ‘crazy hero-turned-villain hippo’ filmed at Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa:
