A pet parrot who spoke with a British accent went missing 4 years ago but its owner was surprised upon learning it now speaks Spanish!
When he lost his pet parrot Nigel some 4 years ago, Darren Chick thought he would never see it again. A Briton living in Torrance, California, Chick had taught his African gray parrot to speak with a British accent.
The bird got lost and Chick didn’t know its whereabouts. He eventually gave up on ever finding Nigel when a Southern California veterinarian knocked at his home one day to return the pet!
Teresa Micco also had an African gray parrot which also got lost after finding an opening in her aviary. She had been running ads for her own missing bird when a woman named Julissa Sperling found a bird with the same description outside her home.
“He was the happiest bird. He was singing and talking without control. He was barking like the dogs. I’m from Panama and he was saying, ‘What happened?’ in Spanish,” Sperling told the Telegraph UK.
After finding Micco’s ad, Sperling immediately brought the bird to her clinic but the vet would soon realize the bird wasn’t hers. Amazingly, she discovered that the parrot had a microchip which she was able to use to track its real owner, Chick.
Micco recalled, “I introduced myself and said, ‘Have you lost a bird?’ He initially said, ‘No.’ But he thought I meant recently.”
After she told him she had his African grey parrot and verified if his name was Darren Chick, he looked at her like she was crazy – and told her the bird was missing 4 years!
Darren received a second surprise when Nigel began chattering in Spanish and no longer speaks English. He hopes the bird would eventually re-learn how to speak English but already feels quite happy his pet is home again; although it bit him the first time he tried to pick it up…
The vet told him that was normal and Nigel would eventually recognize him again and settle back to his old self.
