While thousands of priests and pastors around the world washed the feet of their congregation on Maundy Thursday, Pope Francis tried a different thing that had the world talking: though he washed and kissed the feet of Christian refugees, he also did the same to Muslim and Hindu refugees!
The symbolic gesture is seen to promote brotherhood and peace among Christians and different religious groups, something that is quite important in the wake of the Brussels attacks which had once again triggered an increase in anti-Muslim sentiment among Christians.
In his homily, the pope said, “All of us together, Muslims, Hindus, Catholics, Copts, Evangelical [Protestants] brothers and sisters — children of the same God — we want to live in peace, integrated.”
The pontiff’s gesture earned mixed reactions on social media; though most are positive and praising the pope for his humility. Once again, this had made people say that this pope is truly one of a kind…
