In an office, one way to keep people motivated and work hard to surpass their goals is to award them for their exemplary service. ‘Best Employee’ awards are certainly among the best motivators, especially if these come with a corresponding reward such as gift certificates, food, and trophies or framed certificates.
Knowing this, Michael Reeg of Accuride International Inc.’s southeastern sales center rewarded his best employee with a framed plaque and some treats. But you might be surprised to learn that his best employee is a dog!
Meeka is a sweet dog ‘working’ at the sales center. Michael also ‘employs’ another dog, Kya, but the latter is not so good at the job since she isn’t as loyal to him as Meeka is.
“She [Kya] is really my wife’s dog. So she only comes up to the office when my wife is gone. We are her second choice for company!” Michael explained.
So, why did he think of awarding Meeka as best employee? Well, since he started working from home, he is his own boss and his only employee as well. While that sounds like a neat idea, it can get so boring at times, especially because he’d been in a busy office setting before.
“Transitioning to a home-based position was quite a change. It’s quiet here. You need to get yourself fired up and excited about the day. Having a faithful companion in the office certainly helps,” he revealed.
Before you protest about animal rights and the like, however, know that Meeka doesn’t really get much workload except to keep him some company and listen to his sales pitch practice.
“There are times that I’ll even talk to her as I work through a problem or map out a customer solution. I try out my sales pitches and presentations on her. She’s not easily impressed or swayed. All she hears is ‘blah, blah, blah, Meeka’ — but she likes to hear my voice and I love that she pays attention. Having her in my office all day is something that we both look forward to.”
Meeka was always on time, arriving at the workplace right on Michael’s heels. Even when he is doing field work, Meeka would turn up at the office.
After his first quarter as homebased worker ended, Michael thought it would be a brilliant idea to reward Meeka for a ‘job well done’ as ‘Employee of the Quarter’ – and he certainly made it official by putting up a plaque.
“I was not surprised at all when my dad first showed me the framed picture of Meeka as Employee of the Quarter because Meeka is very loyal to my dad and his (their) work. I just thought it was hilarious,” Reeg’s daughter Madison said.
Since then, Meeka has been named as ‘Employee of the Quarter’. Michael admits he isn’t sure if Kya feel jealous or if Meeka is ‘slacking up’ after all these accolades but he thinks it might be a good idea to award Kya for one quarter ‘just to keep things interesting’. LOL.
