Children will always think of Santa Claus during Christmas Season. They look forward to receiving presents from him as he spreads Christmas joy to small boys and girls and even adults, too. They believe that Christmas celebration wouldn’t be complete without a Santa to make their dreams and wishes come true.
Schmitt-Matzen, a ‘Santa’ in Jackson, Tennessee has been making a lot children happy every Christmas for quite some time. In fact, he had visited many sick children at homes and in the hospital to spread joy, love and cheer in the spirit of the season. But through it all, never in his life did he predict that he will fulfill a dying boy’s wish.
One day, Matzen received a call from a nurse who informed him of a 5-year-old boy who was very sick and had wished to see a Santa. That moment, he was the only person who could fulfill the final wish of the dying boy. Matzen immediately adhered to the request but was only asked to put his Santa suspenders instead of wearing his outfit since there wasn’t enough time.
Matzen was at the hospital as Santa 15 minutes later where he met the little boy’s mother and some family members. They handed him a toy and instructed him to give it to the boy as his present. He then agreed but requested that they leave the room because if he will see them crying, he will break down and definitely wouldn’t be able to do his job.
The little boy’s family submitted to Matzen’s request and had just watched in tears from a hallway window in the Intensive Care Unit.
Santa then headed towards the little boy and saw that he was so weak. And in the jolliest, most cheerful voice, he said, “What’s this I hear about you’re gonna miss Christmas? There’s no way you can miss Christmas! Why you’re my number one elf!”
The boy replied, “I am?”
Santa said, “Sure!”
Shortly, Santa gave the toy to the weak boy who can’t even tear the wrapping paper. And when he managed, upon seeing what was inside, he gave a big smile and rested back on his bed.
The room then was filled with silence as loneliness seem to cover every corner. The boy looked at Santa and said, “They said I’m going to die. How can I tell when I get to where I’m going?”
Santa replied, “Can you do me a big favor? When you get there, you tell them you are Santa’s number one elf, and I know they’ll let you in.”
“They will?” the boy asked.
“Sure!” Santa replied.
The boy sat and gave Santa a big hug.
“Santa, can you help me?” the boy asked again.
That time, Santa was left speechless and just kept on hugging and holding him. Shortly after, the little boy died in his arms. He handed the boy to his mother and immediately went home while crying hard.
The very emotional Matzen that time had somehow thought of leaving his job as a Santa, but then, he confessed that upon seeing children laughing and the joy he was able to bring them, he realized that his role of playing Santa made it possible that an ordinary man like him was able to do extraordinary things to many people.
May the real spirit of Christmas of love and joy live in our hearts not only on Christmas day but in each day of the year. Who knows? Someone out there may also be needing some hope and joy that it’s time to unleash that “Santa” in you!
