How far would you go to make your teeth look wonderful? Many might resort to getting decorated braces or retainers just to add some bling to their mouths but those pale in comparison to what the ancient Maya were doing with theirs.

The Maya, regardless of status in the community, decorated their teeth with gemstones! If you think that is not such a big deal, well, let us tell you that they were not using braces linked with gemstones. Instead, a hole is created in their teeth before the gemstone is glued in. Ouch!

Considering how there are sensitive spots inside our teeth, the Maya had to deal with a lot of pain just to have great-looking teeth.

This leads me to thinking how awesome their dentists have been. Why? Well, these people surely did not get formal education like our dentists do. They had to make sure to create a hole just large enough to the gemstone to fit in. To achieve that, they had to use tools they had to manually wield. Also, they must have adept hands so the teeth will not break while they make the hole.

Herbs might have been used to dull the pain while resins were utilized to glue the gemstone in place.

The end result, however, is awesome! Just imagine flashing a gem-filled smile…it would surely dazzle the beholder.
