She’s 63 years old and about the right age for retirement [early retirement starts at 60 years old] but Nanay Leticia works as Uber car driver to support her family but she faces a lot of challenges with customers for being an old woman.
Her story was shared on social media by Toyota Auto Club of the Philippines, Francis Samonte, who was quite surprised to have her as driver when he decided to avail of Uber after a medical checkup.
According to Samonte, he first thought that the driver wasn’t really old but just looked so in the photo; thus, he was surprised to discover that she was, indeed, old. She admitted that she’s 63 years old but couldn’t retire because she still has to support her sons and does not have savings for retirement; one of her sons works in maintenance department at the Central Bank while the other is jobless.
Aside from Nanay Leticia’s problem of having to earn a living for her grown-up sons, she also faces challenges at work because a lot of her customers drop/cancel their booking upon seeing her profile, leading to a lower rating of 4.3 on her Uber account.
Also, she is just renting the car she’s using as Uber driver; thus, part of her earnings also go to the owner instead of her getting everything for her family.
Samonte lamented, “It’s sad that many of the elderly people in our country still have to work to survive, and it’s even more disappointing that young and abled people are still dependent on them. I missed my mom. Most mothers like Nanay Leticia would do anything for their children, just for the latter to survive.”
“Love God, love your work, love your children, and of course love your parents, because they would do anything for you. I gave Nanay Leticia a bonus for the day. She did not want to accept it but I insisted; she was even teary-eyed. I wished her all the best. I will continue to pray for her. Five stars for Nanay Leticia!”
