Every year, millions of students in the Philippines and other parts of the world receive medals for their achievements in the past year but not too many receive medals made from solid, real gold!
In the mining village of Mt. Diwalwal in Monkayo, Compostela Valley set in the province of Davao, Philippines, all valedictorians in the past 14 years have been receiving real gold medals! Such medals are worth Php35,000 ($760) and only given to valedictorians of the two schools in the village, Mt. Diwata Elementary School and Mt. Diwata High School.
These year’s deserving valedictorians were Jolimae Bordon (elementary) and Pearl Angelie Barabat (high school). The medals come from the village officials.
Since these solid gold medals are awarded to the students, they are free to do whatever they want with it – and while a lot of people would think the students would forever keep the medals for posterity, a lot are actually forced to sell or pawn these much-coveted awards due to poverty. In this mining town known as the richest gold deposit in the Philippines, many of the residents are small-scale miners who remain poor despite the richness of the area…
Still, it is wonderful to learn that the valedictorians receive real gold medals; after all, they do live in a gold-rich place!
