A pair of twins from Kern County, California has earned social media fame after they were born on different years as their mom ‘celebrated’ New Year’s Eve at the hospital. Awwww. Aren’t they adorable?
Maria Flores was rushed to the hospital on New Year’s Eve after experiencing labor pains. She was set to give birth to the twins on January 27 but the babies had other plans.
A spokesman for the hospital explained:
It was definitely a surprise! The whole family feels humbled and blessed and excited. When they realised they were going to be in the hospital over New Year’s Eve, the family planned to celebrate at midnight in the break room.
But then it turned out Maria was in labor, which was a surprise.
It was an exciting wait for the family and the hospital staff, with everyone eager to know what time the babies will be born.
At 11.58pm on December 31, 2017, Maria gave birth to Joaquin who weighed 5lbs 9oz. Just 20 minutes later but already in a different year, Aitana was born with an official time of 12.16am on January 1, 2018; she weighed 4lbs 10.8oz.
Meanwhile, the delivering doctor, Seyed Tamjidi, expressed happiness over the rare moment.
“I’ve been in the practice for almost 30 plus years. I’ve never had the opportunity to do anything like that before.”
The new arrivals were welcomed with so much joy by the staff at Delano Regional Medical Centre who had, along with members of the community, prepared $3,000 worth of gifts to welcome the hospital’s first baby to be born in 2018.
Coincidentally, while Joaquin was the last to be born at the hospital and in Kern County in 2017, Aitana was the first one born in 2018. It was truly an ‘emotional’ and joyful night for the family as well as members of the hospital staff.
It was great that the twins got to bring home the gifts because their arrival was truly something special…
