A hero pitbull was almost put to death for biting a 9-year-old boy but cops soon discovered that the dog only did so because it was trying to save him from his mother!
Pitbulls have this bad reputation of being dangerous; so, when cops arrived at the scene to see a boy and his mother with plenty of bite marks, everyone assumed that Buddy, the pitbull, had bitten the family in rage. The dog was immediately taken into custody.
The boy and the mother were rushed to the hospital with serious bite wounds but cops discovered the body of a 5-year-old boy in the river.
The dog could not explain itself, of course, and was close to being put down when cops realized that it was just trying to save the boy from its own mother!
Piecing the pieces of the puzzle together, investigations revealed that the 27-year-old woman that Buddy bit had actually tried to drown her two sons in Murray River at Moama, on New South Wales-Victoria border in Australia.
Buddy is believed to have intervened by clamping his jaws on the elder brother, dragging him back to safety. When the mother saw that the pitbull was saving the boy, she allegedly went after the dog but was also bitten.
The mother has been charged with murder and attempted murder. She and the boys were not named, for legal reasons.
But with Buddy still being held by the Council, his owners launched a petition to save his life – and it received more than 50,000 signatures, including that of the boys’ maternal grandfather!
“I own a similar dog and I know he was trying to save the boys, it’s their nature when they are raised with kids.
Let the ones who his actions affected decide. I have one grandson left, because this brave dog took action as required,” said the boys’ grandfather.
Thankfully, the Council listened and the dog was set free.
The 9-year-old boy is still recovering from his injuries at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne but he is expected to survive – and while it was Buddy who caused those injuries, it was also the pitbull who had actually saved his life! Sadly, his 5-year-old brother is gone forever.
