You Can Now Find ‘NSFW’, ‘Photobomb’, ‘Humblebrag’, and 1000 More New Words in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Fond of humblebragging but pity yourself that you cannot use the word in a formal document? Grabbing every opportunity and enjoying life’s moment because of FOMO because YOLO? Are you confused now?

FOMO, which means fear of missing out, and YOLO, which means you only live once, are among the new batch of new words making out to Merriam-Webster Dictionary!

ICMYI (in case you missed it), the popular dictionary which had been in circulation since 1828, has been consistently adding up new words. Words are added depending on whether it has made a mark in the language and is projected to linger for quite some time.

For its most recent update, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary took in a number of new words from different categories such as technology, sports, medicine, cooking, politics, and language. There are also new compound terms included in the dictionary such as “train wreck”, “face palm”, and “geek out”.

Here are some of the new words included in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Abandonware: software that is no longer sold or supported by its creator

Airball: to completely miss the basket, rim, and backboard with a shot

Binge watch: to watch many or all episodes of a (TV series) in rapid succession

Botnet: a network or computers that have been linked together by malware: a network of bots

Humblebrag: to make seemingly modest, self-critical, or casual statement or reference that is meant to draw attention to one’s admirable or impressive qualities or achievements

Listicles:  an article consisting of a series of items presented as a list

Net Neutrality: the idea, principle, or requirement that internet service providers should or must treat all Internet data as the same regardless of its kind or destination

NSFW:  not safe for work; not suitable for work—used to warn someone that a website, e-mail attachment, etc., is not suitable for viewing at most places of employment

Photobomb: to move into the frame of a photograph as it is being taken as a joke or prank

SCOTUS: the Supreme Court of the United States—often used as a nickname
