In yet another food scandal bound to rock the already shaky Chinese food market, fake rice made of paper has been discovered in Guangdong province.
A woman named Cai complained about this fake rice, saying she and her family were halfway through the meal when they chomped on unusually hard pieces. Upon close inspection, they allegedly found rolled pieces of paper among real rice on their plates.
The enraged consumer said she bought the rice from a street vendor who told her it was the organic variety, locally grown without pesticides in another countryside in China. She had been buying from that shop and knew the man was not a liar. It is possible that the shopkeeper had no idea he was selling fake rice.
This new fake rice scandal comes in the heels of another fake rice scandal which involved plastic. To date, the sources of these fake rice (paper or plastic) are yet to discovered. We could all hope these fake food do not reach our shores.
