Proving that fame and fortune aren’t always everything, half-Pinoy singer-songwriter Bruno Mars admitted that he is willing to give up everything just to be with his Pinay mother once again but she died of aneurysm back in 2013 and there really is nothing that could bring her back from the **** again.
Still, Mars longs to see his mom again, telling Latina Magazine, “She’s more than my music. If I could trade music to have her back, I would. I always hear her say, ‘Keep going and keep doing it.”
It can be recalled that Mars, a half-Pinoy half Puerto Rican born as Peter Gene Hernandez to Puerto Rican dad Pedrito Hernandez and Filipina mom Bernadette San Pedro Bayot, rose to success in the 2010s after releasing the lead single to debut studio album ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ on July 19, 2010, “Just the Way You Are”.
The hit song was followed by several top performing songs as well. In 2011, he would win the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, his first Grammy. It is said that he spent a lot of his earnings building his mother a beautiful house and providing the family with what they need.
Sadly, despite the money, mommy Bernadette died of brain aneurysm on June 1, 2013. His mother’s passing was a huge blow to the singer who was, admittedly, a “momma’s boy”. Still, he didn’t let her passing bring him down, tweeting some days later, “So thankful for all the love during the most difficult time in my life. I’ll be back on my feet again soon. That’s what mom wants, she told me.”
Even now, over three years after his mother’s passing, the pain lingers with Mars but he smiled while recalling how his mother had taught him “what a woman is supposed to be” and how to love.
“You just gotta know that she’s with me everywhere I go. It’s something that you can’t imagine – the pain and the things that you keep going back to: ‘I wish I would’ve done this or said this.’ You just have to see life differently. It shows you the real importance of life. Nothing else matters in this world but family and your loved ones,” he declared.
