Dad Carries Disabled 12-Year-Old Son, Walks 29 Kilometers to School to Give Him a Better Life

We all know that parents would do anything and everything for their children to have a better life. One dad readily exemplified this by carrying his disabled 12-year-old son to school, walking 29 kilometers a day just to give him a chance at a better life.

The single dad named Yu Xukang, 40, lives in a rural area in Sichuan Province, China. Xukang’s son Xiao Qiang was already 12 years old but because the boy was born with a disability that left him with twisted arms and legs as well as a hunched back, the dedicated father had to carry him around.

Xukang works in the farm but because the job was difficult, he wished his son could have a better life. He knew that the only way that could happen was if the boy could find a good job in the future. For that to happen, Xukang knew his son should finish his education.

I know that my son is physically disabled but there is nothing wrong with his mind,” he explained.

But schools near their home would not accept the boy because of his disability. The dedicated dad looked everywhere for a school until he found one, Fengxi Primary School, but it was about 9 miles (14.5 km) away from their home.

Still, the distance was nothing to this dad who wished for a better life for his son. So, each day, he wakes up at dawn to prepare their food and other things they needed; then puts his son on his back and treks to the school.

He found a job near the school, allowing him to wait for his son. Late in the afternoon, they would take the trek back home. Walking 29 km a day is no joke but this dad was willing to do everything for his son. There was no option for transportation at the area, leaving him with no choice but to walk each day.

Thankfully, the dad’s persistence paid off. Someone from the school finally took notice. The local school authorities intervened, providing the duo with a home near the school so that Xukang no longer had to walk all those miles each day.

I know that he will achieve great things,” the proud dad said, beaming with pride after telling reporters that his son is at the top of his class!
