Rylee is a 10-month-old Belgian Malinois who fell overboard in Lake Michigan, some 6 miles away from the shore. She was out boating with owners Edward and Kristin Casas that day.
While Edward was fixing something in the engine room below, Kristin was steering the boat. They were 10 minutes out into the lake when they noticed Rylee missing. They immediately made a mayday call for “dog overboard”.
One of those who quickly responded to the call, Lynn Fiedor, mobilized the Lost Dog Search Team. Fishermen and various boaters scoured the lake for Rylee while others sent out word to communities around the lake to be on the lookout for the lost dog.
It was not until the following day that the couple received a call, telling them the dog has been sighted some 12 miles from the shore, at Platte River Campground. They immediately went to the campgrounds on a borrowed truck from a kind harbormaster, bringing Rylee’s favorite toys and food along.
In a clearing near the woods where Rylee was spotted, the couple marked their scent around the truck and lay with Rylee’s stuff. When Edward sounded one of Rylee’s favorite toys, the dog came bounding from the woods and greeted them joyfully!
It was a beautiful reunion; although Edward would admit most of them shed tears upon seeing Rylee.
“Let me tell you, I’m not the kind of guy that cries but oh did this make me cry. I am so proud of this dog and so proud of and grateful for Lynn [Fiedor],” Edward admitted.
