Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had so many blockbuster projects that he reportedly earned $64.5 million from June 2015 to June 2016; for this, he was recently named by Forbes Magazine as the Highest Paid Actor on its annual list.
Johnson bested top 2 placer Jackie Chan by a couple of millions – the latter earned $61 million. He’s close to $10 million richer than Matt Damon last year as the latter only earned $55 million. But the earnings of these Top 3 highest paid actors are still far more impressive than the others in the bottom half of the Top 10. For instance, #7 Vin Diesel about half of friend/rival Johnson’s earnings as he only earned $35 million within the same period.
Of course, Johnson’s $64.5 million for just one year is quite impressive but you’d surely be more impressed to learn that The Rock started from rock bottom, pun intended.
Coming from a poor family despite his dad being a professional wrestler named Rocky (not Rocky Balboa, of course, but Rocky Johnson), Johnson experienced being so poor that not only was the family’s car repossessed when he was 14 years old, they were also evicted from their home within the same week!
These incidents led to Johnson trying to find ways to earn money for the family yet his bouts with depression and injuries laid his full NFL scholarship to the University Of Miami to waste. He signed for CFL’s Calgary Stampeders in 1995 but he eventually lost that one, too.
Afterwards, he returned home with just $7 in his pocket – even in those days, the amount was a pittance but even if that money did not take him places, it would become his inspiration to work doubly hard to reach his dreams.
He would follow in his dad’s footsteps as professional wrestler – and realized that this was his true calling! Johnson would become famous as “The Rock”, a career which began in 1996 when he signed with the World Wrestling Federation.
But as we all know, Johnson did not stop at being a wrestler but also went on to have a lucrative career in Hollywood.
Who would have thought that the guy who started out with $7 in his pocket those many years back would become Hollywood’s most recent highest paid actor of the year? Awesome, right?
He thinks so, too! In a tweet, he proudly looked back to where he had come from so he could inspire others, “Want to say two things about this. I started w/ $7 bucks. If I can overcome, so can you. Waffle House on me!!”
