Bali is a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, so beautiful that it often appears in many people’s bucket list of places to visit — and it seems that infamous ‘party beggar’ Benjamin Holst also had it on his list!
Banking on a congenital condition that left his leg perpetually swollen, Holst who hails from Germany, conned thousands of people in several countries, including Thailand and the Philippines – and he’s been spotted partying in Bali, Indonesia just a few weeks ago!
Back in 2014, Holst made it to international news sites after he was deported from Thailand for ‘duping the entire nation’. His modus operandi was quite simple. He would sit at the sidewalk of a crowded place, possibly near a mall or church, where he would hold a sign that he needs money.
Seeing his swollen foot and taking pity that a foreigner is suffering in their country, the locals readily gave him money. The people of Thailand had been especially helpful, even contributing money to buy him plane tickets for home aside from giving him cash for his daily needs and so he could afford a hotel room as he claimed he was living in the streets.
Instead of taking the flight back home, however, Holst never showed up! He was later spotted at the ‘red light district’ in Pattaya, spending the donors’ money partying with bar girls! This sparked outrage in Thailand, leading to his deportation.
Holst was, however, spotted in Denmark afterwards and would soon make his way to the Philippines in 2015. Since then, he led a low profile life but had recently surfaced in Bali, Indonesia – back to his partying ways.
In a Facebook post, Holst shared photos with some girls at Crusoe’s Bar & Restaurant in Kuta but Coconuts Bali revealed that these were taken before he took to begging in the streets of Tabanan, Bali.
It seems that Holst is enjoying his time in Bali… On September 10, however, he revealed that he has left Bali. His next destination? Still unknown. But he could be heading back to the Philippines as he posted the following status before the “Good Bye Bali” post!
But while the international community slams Holst’s actions, dubbing him a conman, there were also those who admired this guy for traveling the world and having fun without spending his own money but only relying on the kindness of strangers for survival!
