When Jack Vidgen auditioned for Australia’s Got Talent Season 5 in 2011, the charming 14-year-old boy shocked the judges with his rather unusual song choice: “I have Nothing” by Whitney Houston.
Anyone who has ever heard the song would surely recognize how extremely hard it would be to sing this masterpiece perfectly. It just has too many difficult notes that even some professional singers would find trouble hitting them all correctly.
The judges and the audience looked skeptic but judge Kyle Dalton Sandilands nailed everyone’s sentiments. He said, “Wow! That’s a big song. You’re either gonna be amazing or dreadful – both I will enjoy” which got the audience chuckling.
Then Jack began to sing…
Jack had amazed Kyle after all! Because the man stood up along with everyone else in the studio after Jack finished singing his awesome rendition of Whitney’s very difficult song.
The standing ovation was not enough for judge Brian McFadden, however. He quickly ran up the stairs to the stage, to give Jack kisses on the cheeks after his song performance.
When the applause died down, the judges praised Jack’s performance. Kyle’s words were, again, the most impressive because he predicted that Jack could easily win the competition using his awesome voice and effortless singing.
A Real Winner
After he passed the auditions, Jack went on to pass the first semi-final show by singing a cover of the Dreamgirls’ “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”.
A cover of “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele during the final showdown helped Jack gain public votes to advance to the grand finals where he sang an original song, “Yes I Am” he co-wrote with 2 other people.
Just as Kyle had predicted during the auditions, Kyle easily won the competition and was declared the overall winner of Australia’s Got Talent Season 5. He went home with the $250,000 prize money and signed a record deal with Sony Music Australia.
