It is a sad reality that people will always judge us by our looks – and that’s even more profound in places that involve transactions with big money, such as car showrooms and even mall outlets selling gadgets or expensive items.
Whether we like it or not, sales people really look at potential customers based on their looks. More often than not, they will not ‘waste their time’ making a sales pitch on someone who ‘obviously’ couldn’t afford to buy. But that’s where they are wrong.
A lot of rich people don’t really flaunt their riches. Many wear ‘ordinary clothes’ and don’t act snobbish to get VIP treatment. Many just wait for their turn or just help themselves around the store.
There’s this nice story about an old man who walked inside a car showroom to cool down. It was a rather hot day.
Seeing the tired old man enter the showroom, a sales agent immediately rushed to his side and asked, “How are you today, sir? How may I help you?”
“Sorry, you do not need to serve me. I just came in to enjoy your air-conditioned room. It is a hot and humid day today. I will leave when I have cooled down a little,” the old man timidly replied.
But the sales agent didn’t mind. This was an old man in need. She gave him his full attention, even if he’s just there to cool down.
“That’s right. Today sure is a hot and humid day. Come in and Let me get you a glass of cold tea,” she offered, leading the old man to the sofa to rest.
“But I am a farmer and I work in the fields. I am afraid that I might ruin your sofa,” the farmer replied, rather apologetically.
“No worries. The sofa is prepared for our customers to sit on,” she assured the old man.
Despite knowing he wouldn’t be buying from the showroom, the sales agent gave him a glass of iced tea. After a few minutes, the old man was sufficiently ‘cooled down’. He stood up and had a look at the trucks on display at the showroom.
“Are you interested in buying a truck?” the kind sales agent was there, ready to assist.
“Sorry, I am a poor farmer and I do not have money to buy this truck and by the way I do not need this truck at all,” he replied.
“No worries, it is not a problem if you are not buying. I will explain to you the truck’s specifications and who knows you might have a friend who is interested,” she replied with a smile.
The sales agent patiently explained the truck’s specifications to this poor old farmer. When she was done, he handed her a piece of paper and told her, “This is the type of truck and quantity that I need. Please arrange them for me, thank you.”
But when she looked at the paper, it was an order for 18 units!
“Sir, I could not make a decision here as the quantity that you want to order is considered a bulk purchase and need my manager to personally serve you,” she told him.
“Miss, you do not need to look for your manager. I am a farmer and currently, my business is expanding so I need to buy a fleet of trucks but I have no knowledge about trucks. My worst fear is the after-sales service of the trucks and the maintenance of the trucks. So my son came up with this simple and brilliant idea which is to test every showroom in the town.”
Isn’t that nice? It turned out the old man did the same thing in other showrooms.
“I have been to a few showrooms before I came here and I have been using this exact same scenario but in the end, I was not served by any salesman at all. I was left standing alone looking at the trucks. This has made me very disappointed.
Whereas, your company knew I was not a customer but still served me enthusiastically. So I decided to buy my trucks from you as your good service proves that this company will have good after-sales services.”
