We’ve heard a lot of disgusting stories about fake or contaminated food in China – and another stomach-churning one has surfaced: the use of “gutter oil” taken directly from the sewers!
It seems that some enterprising Chinese folks found out that liquid from the sewers and underground canals contain oil which might look disgusting at first but could be processed to make it look and taste like commercial cooking oil!
With so little capital used in the production of this nice-looking but utterly disgusting oil, these people are able to sell the oil at around $940 per ton – nearly half of the prevailing price for commercial cooking oil ($1500/ton). It comes as no puzzle to us, then, to learn that many restaurants are using the gutter oil because of its much lower price tag. After all, the oil looks and tastes like the real thing; thus, many restaurant owners are tricked into thinking this was real cooking oil (or some know the oil is from the sewers but probably want to gain more profits!).
It is believed that as many as 10% (one out of ten) of lower market meals in China were prepared using gutter oil. That’s utterly disgusting and dangerous!
Consumption of food cooked using gutter oil could lead to gastro-intestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhea as well as long-term issues such as ******! Scary…
