Completing a marathon is a great accomplishment because it takes a great amount of training and stability to be able to run long distances to go to the finish line. Crossing the line, though, brings the greatest amount of joy, with a feeling of accomplishment when you know that you have completed a big challenge — and that feeling is more special if you finish it along with the people you value the most.
That’s why I’m in awe with this amazing couple who have finished tons of marathons together, through the years! Meet the 80-year-old couple who has traveled the world running marathons together. At 80-years old, Kay and Joe O’Regan are redefining what it means to be in shape — and to be in love. Some may even call it ‘relationship goals’.
This awesome couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary by crossing the finish line of the 2016 Cork City Marathon hand-in-hand! With half of a mile left to the finish line, the two intertwined hands and finished the race with a time of 5 hours and 23 minutes, placing both of them first for their age group. Isn’t it the sweetest?
The race took place in Southern Ireland last June 6, but this wasn’t the first time the couple participated in a marathon. Throughout the years, Kay has run in 113 races, while Joe participated in 29. I guess their motto is, “Never say never.” According to Kay, “Running is a part of our lives. And it hopefully will be for a few more years. In Ireland there is a saying: those who pray together stay together. Well we say, those who run together stay together.”
Their marathon tradition began before their 50th birthdays, which are three weeks apart.
While they prefer to take part in separate marathons and races, the two decided that the marathon in Cork City would be the perfect way to celebrate their 80th birthdays as well as their 57th wedding anniversary.
