The MacBook Pro is among the most expensive gadgets available in the market today, with prices ranging from $1,300 to as high as $2,800 but some guys were able to buy one for just $1 – and they even used the credit card of the another person for it.
Yep, it’s hacking and really against the law but these two were able to show the world that it can be done.
It is important to note here, however, that these hackers were just trying to show the vulnerability of a point-of-sale (POS) system which they managed to successfully hack.
It seems that the team was offering a system for businesses to prevent such hacks from entering their system – but it was still amazing (and crazy!) how they managed to get this done.
What’s even sillier and, perhaps, crazier about this whole thing is that the hackers were actually able to do this using a rather small and simple Raspberry Pi computer estimated to be worth around $25 (Php1,300)!
Working for software security company called ERPScan, the team was able to discover a security hole on point-of-sale (POS) machines that can allow hackers to manipulate the price of any item they want and even use another person’s credit card to pay for the purchase!
During their test run, they were able to successfully purchase a MacBook Pro for just $1. Of course, this might be harder to do in real life as the cashier would definitely be shocked with the very low price that he/she would call the manager to check if it was true; however, the guys at ERPScan said hackers could manipulate the prices to discounts so that the cashier will not suspect anything was amiss…
