The international community expressed outrage over photos of a beautiful 12-year-old girl wearing a wedding gown and veil while posing with the groom who is old enough to be her grandfather at a seaside setting in Lebanon.
With the country known for child brides, the photo sparked international outrage because everyone thought the wedding was for real – but it turned out that there was more to these photos than meets the eye.
Actually, the child bride and her old groom are but actors who were hired to portray a couple for a photoshoot by KAFALebanon, a campaign group whose name means “enough” in Arabic. Their campaign aims to raise awareness on child marriages in countries like Lebanon, in hopes that this practice would soon end.
In the video which had gone viral on YouTube, KAFALebanon shows people a glimpse into the world of forced child marriages where very young girls are married off to mostly old people who are often more than twice their age.
While the clip affected a lot of netizens, having gained over 2 million views since it was posted, a lot still has to be done to eradicate this practice from many places across the world. For now, we are one with KAFALebanon in hoping that someday no one will ever be forced to marry, especially young kids!
