A woman was left ‘crying’ purple tears after she had her eyeball tattooed. Due to the painful leakage that has caused her blurred vision, she now plans to get the offending eye removed to get rid of the problem once and for all.
Just like a number of young people, Catt Gallinger, 24, from Ottawa, Canada wanted to look unique and was quite ready to try something radical just to stand out from her peers. So, she thought of getting a scleral tattoo wherein purple ink was injected into a flap in her eyeball so that the white part of her eye would look purple.
The plan seemed great but the procedure went horribly wrong. She did get the white part of her eye looking purple but the dye would soon began to leak out, causing her to ‘cry’ purple tears.
What’s worse is that the leakage was not only extremely painful, it would soon cause her to have blurred vision. As the days passed, her condition worsened and she was forced to go to an eye doctor who warned that she could go blind.
One option was to remove the flap holding the purple dye inside her eyeball but it was risky and could still lead to blindness. Moreover, they had to race against time because the dye was beginning to solidify and could get stuck in her eye forever.
She’s been suffering for weeks that Catt thinks the best option now is just to get the eye removed so she won’t have to deal with the pain and discomfort brought about by the botched eye tattoo. Of course, that could still mean more pain from surgery but at least she wouldn’t have to deal with the continued painful leakage and the threat of losing her eyesight.
After Catt’s story went viral, Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (EPSO) released a statement:
Ophthalmologists around the world are experiencing increasing numbers of patients with blindness and loss of an eye because of the increasing popularity of eyeball tattooing,
The risky act of tattooing an eye is being performed by untrained individuals who have no knowledge of the eye’s delicate anatomy.
