A woman recently went viral after posting a photo taken during her wedding day – when her mother-in-law upstaged her by also wearing a wedding gown and arriving with her hair in an updo, similar to what brides usually wear to the wedding! Tsk. Tsk.
Monster mother-in-law or simply a trendy, thrifty woman who couldn’t resist a bargain?
American comedian and TV show host Jimmy Fallon asked his many followers to share their worst #WeddingFail stories. Thousands of people quickly sent their replies, but the best (or worst?) one came from Amy Pennza.
“My mother-in-law wore a wedding dress to my wedding. So, yeah, top that one, Twitter,” Amy wrote, tagging the host on her post.

Her #WeddingFail story was so outrageous that it’s hard to believe it even happened at all! But the Ohio-based novelist knew people would be skeptical of her claim; thus, she also uploaded a photo taken during the event.
In the picture, two women were talking – and they both appeared to be brides. One might think this was a double wedding of sorts. It really was hard to tell if the other one is a bride or not because they both wore beautiful gowns and achieved the perfect bridal with the right hair and makeup.
Considering that the bride is supposed to be the star of the show, it was simply crazy that her mother-in-law would arrive clad in a wedding gown!
Netizens were quite curious whether the other woman ‘survived’ the night and if Amy had done something to get back on her for taking some of the limelight. Thankfully, Amy is a rather understanding woman who didn’t think it was necessary to confront her mother-in-law over this issue.
“I don’t remember much about the day. Most people say their wedding is a blur, and that’s true for me, too. But I know I said this: ‘You… You could be the bride…’” she explained.
Amy’s sister and best friend were worried she would do something crazy to get back on the older woman.
“They both spent the reception looking at me, then each other, then MIL, then me, then the cop the venue made us hire — hoping I didn’t go for his taser. I’m happy to report the wedding unfolded without bloodshed, or anyone being shoved into the champagne fountain,” Amy joked.
Aside from not ruining the woman’s dress, as many netizens claimed they would have done if this happened to them, Amy would actually praise her mother-in-law later on, saying that she could always count on the older woman for help, especially when her kids were still babies.
“When my twins were newborns, she drove across town every night, slept on the sofa, and did three feedings. For two babies. Every night for months. She’d walk over hot coals for her grandchildren. She gives them everything. Because, you know, she grew up with nothing,” Amy defended her mother-in-law.
Growing up really poor, it turned out that her mother-in-law became extremely frugal. Even now that she has money, she could not resist a big bargain – even if that meant wearing a wedding gown to her son’s wedding.
“Sure, she wore a wedding dress to my wedding. But she has more than made up for it since. When I told her about this getting a lot of attention, and said I was worried it might hurt her feelings, she waved it off, ‘Whatever makes me famous,’” Amy added.
